The Azure AI Engineer roadmap at a glance
Five stages, about 12 weeks at 10–12 hours a week. Finish each checkpoint before you move on.
Azure & cloud basics
Portal, resources, identity and cost.
Python & data
Python, APIs, JSON and pandas.
AI & ML fundamentals
How models learn and are evaluated.
Azure AI & GenAI
Azure OpenAI, AI Search, Vision, Language.
Projects & jobs
Portfolio, AI-102 and interviews.
Stage 1: Azure and cloud fundamentals
Every Azure AI service runs inside an Azure subscription, so start by learning how Azure is organised, secured and billed.
📘 Learn
🛠️ Practise
- Create an Azure free account.
- Create a resource group and a storage account.
- Set a budget alert so you never get a surprise bill.
Stage 2: Python and data basics
Azure AI engineers use Python to call AI services, clean data and build small apps. Learn only what you will use.
📘 Learn
🛠️ Practise
- Write a script that reads a CSV with pandas.
- Call a public REST API and print the JSON result.
- Push your code to a GitHub repository.
Stage 3: AI and machine learning fundamentals
Before using Azure AI services, understand what they do underneath — how models learn, how they are tested and how to use AI responsibly.
📘 Learn
🛠️ Practise
- Complete the Microsoft Learn AI-900 learning path.
- Train a simple model in a notebook and check its accuracy.
- Write one page on responsible AI principles in your own words.

This is the core of the Azure AI Engineer role: choosing the right Azure AI service, connecting it securely and building it into an application.
📘 Learn
🛠️ Practise
- Deploy a model in Azure OpenAI and build a simple chat app.
- Index your own documents in Azure AI Search and answer questions over them.
- Extract fields from an invoice with Document Intelligence.
Choose one focus and go deep
Generative AI apps
Chatbots, copilots and RAG apps with Azure OpenAI and AI Search.
Most in demandConversational & language AI
Text analytics, translation, speech and question answering.
Great for support & BPOVision & document AI
Image analysis, OCR and document processing pipelines.
Finance, healthcare, retail- Like building apps and chat experiences → Generative AI apps
- Like language, text and voice → Conversational & language AI
- Like images, forms and automation → Vision & document AI
Stage 5: Projects, certification and job preparation
Recruiters hire proof. Turn what you built into a portfolio, prepare for AI-102 and practise interviews.
📘 Learn
🛠️ Practise
- Build 2–3 portfolio projects (e.g. a RAG chatbot over company PDFs, an invoice extractor, a speech-to-text summariser).
- Write a clear README with architecture and screenshots for each.
- Take AI-102 practice assessments on Microsoft Learn.

How to study each week
📘 Learn + lab (6–7 hrs)
Watch or read one topic, then build it the same day in Azure.
✍️ Write it up (2–3 hrs)
Document what you built on GitHub in plain English.
🔁 Revise & rest (1–2 hrs)
Review your notes, retry one lab and take a break.
Mistakes that slow beginners down
- Jumping straight to ChatGPT-style apps without Azure basics — you get stuck on keys, regions and permissions.
- Only watching videos. If you didn’t build it in Azure, you haven’t learnt it.
- Leaving resources running. Always set budgets and delete labs you no longer need.
- Collecting certificates without projects. Interviewers ask what you built.
- Learning every service at once. Pick one focus in Stage 4 and go deep.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Azure AI Engineer roadmap?
It is a step-by-step learning path: Azure and cloud basics, then Python and data skills, then AI and machine learning fundamentals, then Azure AI services such as Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Search, and finally projects, certification and job preparation. Following the stages in order means every new topic builds on the one before it.
How long does it take to become an Azure AI Engineer?
With about 10–12 hours of study a week, most beginners can cover the five stages in roughly 12 weeks. People with prior IT or programming experience often move faster through the first two stages. Getting job-ready also depends on how many hands-on projects you build.
Do I need coding to become an Azure AI Engineer?
Yes, basic Python is needed. You will use it to call Azure AI services through SDKs and REST APIs, process data and build small applications. You do not need to be an advanced developer — the roadmap teaches the Python you actually use in Stage 2.
Which certification should I take for Azure AI?
Most learners start with AI-900 (Azure AI Fundamentals) to build the basics, then prepare for AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate), which focuses on designing and implementing Azure AI solutions. Microsoft updates exams regularly, so always check the current skills outline on Microsoft Learn before you book.
Is Azure AI a good career in 2026?
Many companies are adding AI features to their products on Microsoft Azure, which creates demand for people who can build, deploy and manage these solutions. Roles include AI engineer, Azure AI developer, generative AI developer and ML engineer. Hands-on projects and a certification make your profile much stronger.
Can a fresher or non-IT person follow this roadmap?
Yes. Stage 1 and Stage 2 are designed for complete beginners, including freshers and people from non-IT backgrounds. Take a little extra time on cloud and Python basics, and practise every week — consistency matters more than your background.
